When our client – specialist Smoke Extract Ventilation Contractor INTERACTIVE SPECIAL PROJECTS LIMITED (ISP) – needed proven expertise to manufacture and deliver Smoke Extract Fan Sets and replacement Automatic Opening Ventilator (AOV) ducts for T2 Manchester Airport, they knew exactly where to go.
Global-player Mace Group has the overall framework agreement with Manchester Airport Group for the redevelopment of Terminal 2 and its integration with the new extension. This phase 2 project is scheduled to be completed and operational towards the end of 2025 and the £1.3Billion transformation is expected to serve 29 Million passengers in the first three years of operation.
The twin challenge of the size of the fan sets and the complexity of accessing the roof whilst working on an active airport was met after months of planning and coordination with other trades and stakeholders. It was agreed that the installation works – superbly executed by Ventex Limited – were to be undertaken at night to negate the potential risks and minimise the impact on airport operations.
With this in mind, the duct components and in-line equipment (such as fans and silencers) were part-assembled to reduce the crane lifting time. This, however, was obviously restricted to the Working Load Limit of the crane with its arm at full extension.

The first crane lifts of this critical infrastructure equipment were successfully performed this month (November 2024) and a second set is scheduled for January 2025.
As you’d expect for the redevelopment of an International Airport project, this was a truly multi-agency, multi-discipline project.
We’d like to thank everyone involved for their collaboration and support; with special thanks to Adrian Egan and David Fenlon at ISP; David Eggleton and Jonothan Bejsiuk at NG Bailey; Thomas Greenwood and Joseph Seed at Ventex Limited and Architects, Pascall+Watson.
And not to forget key Caswell / Caswell FRD team members on this project: Graeme Hayhoe, Brad Pickering, Jamie Slater, Alan Davies, Phill Cole and Dominic Popland.
